Footballer Wayne Rooney Undergoes Hair Transplant
Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has confirmed that he has had a hair transplant.
The procedure took place at the prestigious Harley Street hair clinic in London, which is known for its use by celebrity and VIP clients. The surgery is thought to have cost Rooney thousands of pounds, and was confirmed by the footballer on his Twitter account after he was spotted outside the clinic wearing a baseball cap.
Rooneys experience with male pattern baldness has been well documented by the media, but this is the first time he has publically taken steps to reverse the effects. This form of hair loss is very common in men, though the rate of thinning for Rooney at such a relatively young age - 25 - is less common.
Hair transplant surgery involves a procedure called follicular unit extraction (FUE), where a surgeon removes individual follicles from an area of healthy hair with a fine needle and then transplants them to the areas affected by baldness. Since the first hair transplant surgery was performed in the 1950s, the techniques have become more advanced and more successful, with the best treatments offering quick healing times and less scarring.
Though hair transplants have a fairly high success rate, they are often too expensive for most men suffering from male pattern baldness, with surgeries costing anywhere between 3,000 and 18,000. Many men choose more affordable solutions such as Propecia, the only prescription medication available to treat male pattern baldness, or over-the-counter lotions and gels, which are very cheap but do not have clinical data to back up their efficacy claims.
