Inland Empire could use a film program

The Inland Empire needs an Everyman's Film Program, and that means every woman, too. I did a little checking, and there is definitely room for such a thing here.

What prompted my thoughts was an email I received from Richard Boyle, a Hollywood screenwriter, who makes his home in Forest Falls and dabbles in regional politics.

An Academy Award nominee for his screenplay "Salvador," Boyle's email suggested creation of a soup-to-nuts film program to be established in the Inland Empire, a potential job generator.

And it could be a Saturday-Sunday program adults could attend without giving up their day jobs.

Last year, I learned of the tremendous interest in film in the Inland Empire through covering the 48-Hour Film Project, a program for high-achieving amateurs and industry professionals wanting try their hands at different elements of the business.

Such a program as suggested by Boyle could teach everything about the art of filmmaking from lighting and set-building to cinematography, screenwriting and direction.

Boyle would like to teach in such a program, so he would like to see it located on the campus of Crafton Hills College. It's closer to his home, but he sees numerous professional instructors participating in such a program. Many of the pros live in the Inland Empire, he said, and he predicted plenty would jump at the chance to teach in such a program.

Apparently, that's the case, as Boyle indicates Crafton Hills Chancellor Bruce Baron is enthusiastic about the idea.

Boyle also envisions financing coming from industry organizations and insiders.

The idea appeals to me, although I have no filmic skills. I'm a lifelong movie buff, and it's a wonderful art form for people with creative instincts in that direction. I also would like to see film jobs created for Inland denizens, hard hit by the never-ending Great Recession, which is looking more like a depression every day.

I spoke to a young Inland-grounded filmmaker I know to get her thoughts on such a project. She's former newspaper copy editor Jeanette Di Pinza, whose playful nom de guerre in the film world is daDuck, taken from the University of Oregon Ducks. She's a loyal alum.

Here are her thoughts:

"Mr. Boyle's idea for a filmmaking hub would be of great use to the Inland Empire. I know many I.E. filmmakers who travel to L.A. or San Diego to learn how to make pictures as well as to get paying gigs - myself included.

Momyer Fire Near Forest Falls Partially Contained : Big Bear News ...

The vegetation fire near Forest Falls is now 40% contained after burning roughly 150 acres. The Momyer Fire was reported at about 10:45am Sunday, May 8, and is located a few miles north of the Forest Falls area in steep terrain west of Alger Creek and north of Momyer Trail. It has not threatened any homes. U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Pam Bierce said an estimated 147 firefighters are expected to fight the blaze. There is no estimate on when the fire will be fully contained and Bierce says “The concern is that it will heat up and the fire can get reestablished quickly.” The fire is burning in thick, dry vegetation that hasn’t burned in at least 50 years. Some trails and roads have been temporarily closed in the area. Traffic on Highway 38 is not being affected. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The incident is accessible by foot only because of the terrain. Aerial support has been assisting ground crews, weather permitting. No firefighters have been injured.
