9 year-old proves doctors wrong, walks on her own

CHATSWORTH, MURRAY COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - Megan Madden is a big fan of singer Miley Cyrus and her song 'The Climb'. It is a song that holds a lot of meaning for the nine year-old because the lyrics tell her story.

"After she got her heart they then realized she had a severe brain injury," said Tammy Madden, "they told us then she would never ever do anything again, she would be a vegetable for the rest of her life."

Megan continues to prove doctors wrong since undergoing a heart transplant at 14 months-old.

She developed communication skills, came off a feeding tube and found her legs with the help of a walker.

Three weeks ago, Megan beat the odds yet again.

"She just decided it's time and she started walking to us," said Madden, recalling the first moment she saw her daughter walk on her own.

Since that day Megan has been building mobility. Her inspiration has come from a new friend, who has taught her to ride horses, strengthening her legs.

"They bonded the first time they met because he's also in a wheelchair," said Madden.

A friendly competition with Megan's grandmother, who recently broke her hip, has also served as a motivator.

"When I was at the rehab center I told her I was going to walk before her," said Betty Hodge, "and she said she was going to walk first."

Hodge says she has never been so happy to be wrong.

"Now she says she told me she would walk first," laughed Hodge.

Megan's next goal is to run, and there is no doubt she will achieve that.

Megan's parents plan to donate her walker to a child in need, as they have all of her equipment. They also give their testimony in local churches regularly, hoping to inspire other families in the same position. They hope one day Megan will be able to tell her own story.

Megan's family continues to pay medical bills as she continues to receive treatment in Atlanta. A fund, for the benefit of Megan, remains open at the First National Bank of Chatsworth to help.
