Each summer, the treacherous coastal road in Italy linking picturesque Sorrento with postcardy Positano is jammed with cars and buses bringing tourists through the fragile hill towns of the Amalfi Coast. Long waits for a table and abominable prices on everything from dinky hotel rooms to mediocre pasta are customary. But just south of Amalfi is Cilento National Park, where a dollar goes further and the traffic and tourists are few and far between. The area encompasses dozens of coastal and mountain towns worth stopping for a stroll or an aperitivo. And throughout the summer you’ll find a smattering of cultural events: the London Festival Opera will perform Puccini’s “La Bohème,” “Tosca” and “Madame Butterfly” in Santa Maria di Castellabate, and the nearby temples of Paestum will play host to performances of Medea and the Decameron.
Cilento is stocked with plenty of decent hotels, but the best place to drop your bags and plop on a private beach is Palazzo Belmonte . This secluded medieval property is something like a posh fortress masquerading as a seaside resort, with five acres of walled-in palm gardens enveloping 51 rooms, suites and apartments. (That kind of privacy is probably why Vice President Joe Biden and his wife stayed there in May.) For even more seclusion, you might splurge on Villa la Sirena on the four-mile-long pine-forest reserve of Punta Licosa. In front of the seven-room house lies the island of Licosa, where guests can spend the day lounging beneath olive trees.
While exploring the back roads and tiny medieval villages, be sure to stop at Castellabate, which offers an arresting view of the Diano Valley and miles of coastline. It also has a very good restaurant, Il Caicco , which serves excellent seafood and a wide array of confections made with white figs. After lunch, head to one of the two neighboring hamlets, Santa Maria di Castellabate and San Marco di Castellabate, both of which are paradise for sunbathers. The white sand beaches here are quiet and the sea is crystalline — two things you won’t find in Amalfi.
