Velvet Underground Lyrics
Singer Keren Ann trades her guitar for a gun
It’s exciting when a highly admired artist makes you wonder what on earth happened to her.
“The girl with the guitar and the long hair” is how Keren Ann, 37, describes her past self. The Paris and New York-based singer-songwriter had been, alongside past collaborator Benjamin Biolay, at the heart of an unexpected new wave of rock and chanson-infused French music, the same scene that Feist tapped into for her 2004 breakout LP Let It Die. bob, and she’s holding a pistol. She sings with dark humour about “blood on my makeup … blood on my fans.” Another song imagines scaring art groupies with a gun.
There are still many moments of yearning acoustic finger-picking. Yet even the softly sung, leadoff single is about nicknaming herself “Trouble,” accompanied by an uncharacteristic, electro-disco pulse. So what happened?
“It’s not a stage persona. It’s completely me. I would never sing about something I haven’t felt or been close to, either directly or indirectly, even in fantasy.”
The track Blood On My Hands is the obvious example. The lyrics of splattering blood is sung nonchalantly, sheer cabaret. This isn’t wildly violent, Quentin Tarantino irony. The humour is subtle and mature, as if recounting the imagery while sitting on a hotel veranda in Cannes.
“I always managed to write some uptempo, catchy songs which became successful for other people. But I never managed to do it for myself. I guess there was some switch that had to be turned on,” she says of her new verve. “But I do have this very dark humour.”
Yet if Zeidel isn’t, of course, literally recounting Godard-like mayhem of her own doing, what is the reality this is drawing from?
“In every woman, in order to bring [new facets] into a show or into your image, you need to play around with makeup, with colours.” She had been the earnest girl with the long hair for many years, she adds, and “I’m still that girl, but I’m also the woman who has the dark humour and funny dance moves.”
In contrast to songs like Blood On My Hands , which in particular was about her father who suffered protracted pancreatic cancer and died while she was making the album. He died in her arms in the hospital. And in that lies the reason behind a lot of the album’s need for fun and some bloody-minded release.

But now Keren Ann Zeidel has gone beyond her decade-long progression from Beatlesque folk to Velvet Underground melancholy, beyond her former image of gentle, international sophisticate with a guitar. On the cover of her latest album, 101,

“Remember,” with its incessant Velvet Underground rock beat aided by shrewdly fiery guitar feedback, brings to the fore the album's best lyric: “If you don't catch me when I fall for you, I'm going to have to remember how to fly.

.
Reimagining the tale of Orpheus and his bride into a highly original performance, Mitchell explores a myriad of nuanced themes and emotions through a blend of folk influences deepened by long-time collaborator Michael Corney’s flawless orchestral arrangements. Featuring guest artists like Ani DiFranco , Greg Brown and Justin Vernon , studio production was helmed by Todd Sickafoose and polished the record into an experience that is as striking to listen to as it is to view it live. Shrouded in creative and yet accessible songwriting, Mitchell has weaved together a delicate tapestry of folky acoustics and expressive vocal harmonies. Offset by stark tales that sing of deceit and greed, they collectively reflect her childhood years filled with Tolkien fantasies set to music of all kinds from her parents’ record collection.
Just as influential was the Vermont countryside she still calls home, in a 200-year old farm house not far from the Northeast Kingdom. ‘My parents raised sheep – they still do- and it was on this big farm with our house, my grandparents’ house, and a third house which my brother and his wife now live in. It also has two or three barns,’ she recalls. ‘We didn’t have a television. I mean, we barely had neighbours, so my brother and I had to entertain ourselves a lot. He was a master of this and made up games and stories on the spot. He was influenced at a young age by Tolkien and other fantasy and history books, and led me to believe our woods and cliffs near our house were peopled by elves and fairies.
‘I wasn’t born into that kind of family where your dad plays fiddle by the fireside and your mom sings harmony,” says Mitchell. ‘In fact, my mom has a hard time carrying a melody. But both of them –and my older brother- loved music. We’d put on a record and –my dad and my brother were really into lyrics- they’d shout along every word of a Velvet Underground song or something. It gave them so much pleasure, I couldn’t help but want into that world.’
Like many tweens in the early 90s, she began that path by obsessing over U2 . ‘Me and my girlfriends had this era where we all had ‘boyfriends’ in the band. The alpha girl got Bono, the second in command got The Edge, and I was kind of third in line so I got the drummer. We used to watch the ‘Rattle & Hum’ video and literally make out with the television screen’.
She gradually came of musical age with ‘powerful female role models’ like Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams and Tori Amos, inspiring her to take up songwriting in her later years. ‘My grandparents paid for six years of violin lessons when I was still a little girl. Then I learned guitar from a double-jointed jazz player who rented a little house on our farm. He’d walk up the driveway and give me lessons in exchange for reduced rent.
