Lufthansa Technik Philippines not affected by FAA findings | U.S. ...

Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) on Wednesday said that the negative findings of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had not affected the safety and reliability of aircraft components and added that, in some cases, the aviation body’s statement was taken out of context.

The statement was in reply to an AP article, saying that “a repair station in the Philippines that services planes for nearly 50 airlines around the world has shown a pattern of stubborn problems that safety experts say underscore concerns about the airline industry’s outsourcing of maintenance to facilities in developing countries.”

It added that the FAA’s inspection of Lufthansa Technik Philippines in Manila “had repeated difficulties in following US regulations on matters ranging from record-keeping to calibrating tools used to make repairs.”

Replying to these allegations, LTP said: “None of the FAA audit findings had significant impact on safety and reliability of aircraft and components, each finding has been treated as an opportunity to enhance the existing system as it is an industry standard to deal with findings from internal and external audits.”

“Corrective actions have always been implemented and accepted by the FAA,” the statement said.

At the same time, LTP pointed out that it was Lufthansa Technik AG which was asked by AP so that it was the same company that gave a reply.

However, the Philippine subsidiary also added their comment, where it pointed out that some of the statements on the web-site are taken out of context.

As an example: “discrepancies noted during the FAA renewal audit (18-20, 23-24 Aug. 2010) have not been corrective as of this date.”

The original FAA statement is as follows: “The above discrepancies noted during the FAA renewal audit (18-20, 23-24 Aug.2010) have not been corrective as of this date. An acceptable corrective plan has been submitted.”

According to Liza D. Martija, Marketing Communications Section Manager, Lufthansa Technik Philippines, “Lufthansa Technik AG is the worldwide leader in maintenance, repair and overhaul of commercial aircraft. The six business units of Lufthansa Technik (maintenance, overhaul, component services, engine services, VIP services and landing gear services) serve about 750 customers worldwide.”

She added that Lufthansa Technik network consists of about 30 operating subsidiaries and affiliates.
