Orange Pop: Yost Theater reopens in August with Thrice and more
In 2009 longtime friends Dennis Lluy and Dave Leon signed a 15-year lease and made a commitment to restore the historical Yost Theater and create a viable nightlife and cultural event venue in downtown Santa Ana. Each of the guys has more than 20 years of experience with local music, marketing, promotions and various other niche trades that have kept them slowly, yet steadily, renovating the landmark over the past three years. The Yost Theater has undergone extensive renovation and will reopen in August with a string of modern music performances. Built for the booming vaudeville movement in 1912, the theater was first named the Auditorium. It wasn't until Ed Yost purchased the venue in 1919 that it acquired the name Yost Theater. The Ritz Hotel, which was also purchased by partners Dennis Lluy and Dave Leon, is to the right of the Yost. Both venues are acknowledged historical places.
“We're trying to roll this out perfectly,” Leon says. “From the website to how we're marketing it -- we're putting a lot of thought into it. We're not a big company with deep pockets -- it's just two guys and we're putting together our dream venue and doing it on a super tight budget. Dennis brings things to the table that I can't -- he has a construction background and he's a sound and lighting technician, I come from a marketing and promotions background -- so we are a really great team in this and complement each other well.”
As part of phase two of the renovation project, Lluy and Leon will continue developing the adjoining building, which was once the historic Ritz Hotel, a popular brothel in its heyday. The venue will serve as an extension of the Yost, nearly doubling capacity, and will be used for conferences, other concerts or dance areas. The second phase is expected to be finished by January 2013.
Lluy and Leon, along with their construction crew, spend anywhere from 12-14 hours per day, five to six days a week working in the theater, they say. The new design includes tiered floors with carved iron railings and handcrafted chandeliers, modern-style VIP sections, lounge areas, a balcony with reupholstered theater-style seats and a sectioned-off front “pit” area. They've also invested about $750,000 in audio and video equipment, Lluy says.
