Those were the days

Forty years ago, in 1971, ground-breaking ceremonies for what would become Vail Valley Medical Center were being planned. “The facility is not designed to be a complete hospital but an emergency and interim facility. The building is expected to be ready at the beginning of the 1971-72 winter season,” read the caption for this sketch plan that ran in the Enterprise. Jason Yantzer won a $1,000 scholarship from the Eagle Valley Chamber of Commerce. In his scholarship essay, Yantzer said the local economy and quality of life could be improved by building an indoor gymnasium in Gypsum. Yantzer was also in the news because he earned his Eagle Scout honors and was recognized during a special ceremony at the Eagle Community United Methodist Church. Four young men were charged with assault and battery in the beating of a Battle Mountain High School teacher. The incident happened at the school's football field and around 40 students witnessed the attack. According to the Enterprise, the two students and two older young men were harassing the girls physical education teacher when a male teacher interceded. The four men attacked the male teacher, leaving him unconscious. Soldier J.R. Pinkerton responded to an Enterprise column extolling the greatness of Alaska. “Lady, when I read your article I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or curse. In fact, I must have tried to do all three at the same time for I made a terrible noise and the boys in the squad room thought I was hysterical,” he wrote. “Mr. Seward bought Alaska from Russia, but I doubt very much if we could give it back to them.

My name is Fleur De Kine. I competed in figure at the 2011 Fitness Atlantic for the WBFF. I placed 2nd in Figure Tall and this is my recap of the weekend:

Wow. What a wonderful weekend! It was an incredible experience that I am incredibly thankful for. If there is one word that can sum up competing in the WBFF in the Fitness Atlantic, it is “Opportunity.” It was everywhere- from the moment we walked in the venue to the moment they lowered the curtain.

Friday When we got to check in it was quick and efficient. Everyone was professional and the best part is no one felt harried. This was great because it helps to calm me down when you can tell that everyone involved is excited to be there and enjoying themselves. At check-in we were presented with our competitor goodie bags. Wow. Hands down awesome! Inside were T-Shirts, supplements, magazines, shaker bottles, water bottles, and cosmetics. It also turned out that the bag is the perfect size to carry my meals too!

After registration we were able to mingle while we waited for our rehearsal for the opening number. This was a fun way for the audience to first get a taste of a WBFF show and see all of us athletes on the stage for the first time in a high energy number. After the rehersal I got to meet a few competitors and catch glimpses of WBFF athletes Diana Rose Chaloux and Micah Lacerte who were both very nice and incredibly down to earth and I introduced myself to Alison Dillet who was hands on during rehersal and really quite nice! It was refreshing to have the head of an organization so accessible and positive.

Saturday The next morning my division (figure) had to be at the venue at 9am. When I got to the venue it was already packed. People were lined up for the events at the expo. Tony Horton was giving a P90x seminar and there were Zumba demonstrations happening. The whole place had an amazing energy. Luckily, another competitor saw me and helped me through the crowd and to backstage. Backstage was absolutely awesome. They had everything. One thing I can say is that the staff was happy and really enjoying themselves and us athletes were constantly being checked on and taken care of. Oh, and can I mention the best part? The dressing room was warm and there were mirrors everywhere. There were even versions of craft services table on each floor with healthy snacks and water. All very thoughtful additions to the backstage experience.
