RANCHI: Director general of police G S Rath said the use of narcotics and trafficking were increasingly becoming major concern for police who where taking effective steps to curb the menace, while expressing concern over the growing drug addiction among youths.

Rath, who flagged off a rally by students of Ranchi University in association with police from Albert Ekka Chowk to Sainik Bazar to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, said parents and teachers should take care of children and arrange for counselling to control drug addiction.

"Opium cultivation in the state is being done under the patronage of Maoists," said Rath. The organized crime cell of Jharkhand police is working on this front and efforts are being made to dismantle the opium cultivation in different districts.

Ranchi SSP Praveen Kumar Singh said the entire week starting from Sun-day would be observed as " Drug Abuse Week ".

"Police officers and Narcotics Control Bureau ( NCB ) officials will hold seminars and lectures in different schools and colleges to create awareness on drugs and its addictions," said Singh.

He added that awareness about the law was also necessary and it could only be done with the participation of parents, teachers and guardians of the youngsters, who get addicted to narcotics.

Ranchi University vice-chancellor A A Khan echoed the DGP saying the parents should take care of their wards and counsel them about drugs and its effects. "Youths often try to imitate others which should be taken care of by the parents," said Khan.
