Buxton brings expertise to area camp
— He’s an expert tactician and proud owner of 29 national prep wrestling titles, and for one week each year, Blair Academy (N.J.) coach Jeff Buxton brings his coaching acumen to Green Oaks. The Blair Academy of Northern Illinois just wrapped up its third year at Oak Grove School. Buxton and other wrestling experts spend a week working with close to 50 campers.
Bringing in Buxton was an idea hatched by Amador Ayala and Scott Pucino. Ayala is the head coach of the Libertyville Wildcats Wrestling Club, while Pucino is an assistant who has known Buxton since his college days at the University of Rhode Island.
“Even back then (at Rhode Island), he was a very good clinician,” recalls Pucino, an All-American wrestler in 1976. “He’s a very good technical coach who really breaks down the moves, and he brings his kids to the next level.”
Buxton, who has guided Blair Academy since 1982, didn’t hesitate when asked to help create the camp in 2009.
“(Pucino) wanted to give something back to wrestling,” Buxton said. “I said I would jump on it.”
The 2011 camp included youth wrestlers from Green Oaks, Libertyville, Lake Forest, Deerfield, Waukegan and Antioch.
Some of the coaching luminaries in past years who instructed campers include Carl Adams (a long-time coach at Boston University) and Pete Galea (a former head coach at New Trier who wrestled at Iowa State).
A special guest visited Green Oaks on Friday, when Highland Park resident Mike Poeta coached the campers. Poeta, a two-time IHSA state champion and three-time All-American at the University of Illinois, worked on takedown maneuvers and tilts.
“Mike is training to be an Olympian,” Pucino noted. “The kids really look up to him, and you could see that when he was coaching them. He’s very accessible, and he was really good with the kids.”
Added Buxton: “What a treat for the kids.”
The same could be said for Buxton. His Blair Academy teams have simply dominated the national prep scene over the past 29 years, producing 46 Asics All-Americans.
“I like to bring some East Coast wrestling,” said Buxton, who was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by USA Wrestling in 2006. “I show them a little bit of our system. We give them an introduction to our style of mat wrestling, which is very technical.

#5 St. Paris Graham visits #2 Blair Academy (Jan. 29)
How will St. Paris Graham respond to their seasons first blemish?* We can speculate how big of an impact not having Isaac Jordan (defending state champion) was in deciding the outcome of the St. Edwards match.* Grahams Isaac Jordan (#2 in Ohio) was hoping to be back in the lineup to face St. Eds after being inactive for 6 weeks with an injury.* But he wasnt fully-healthy or match-ready to come back for a showdown against Domenic Abounader, Ohios D-I #1 ranked 160-pounder, who pinned Jordans replacement in the first period, helping St. Eds win the dual meet by 2 points.* Head coach Jeff Jordan needs to rally the team and show they can bounce back after a tough defeat if they want to climb back near the top of the polls and add to their successful 2010-2011 season.
