Driver sought in hit-and-run that killed Aurora motorcyclist

DENVER -- Denver Police are looking for the hit and run driver who struck and killed a motorcyclist on Sunday night. Abdul Alhilo, 25, of Aurora died soon after the crash at Federal and Virginia.

Witnesses said a Jeep Cherokee pulled out of a car wash and into the path of Alhilo, who was traveling south on Federal. Stephanie Sosa was in a car going in the same direction.

"The motorcycle hit the back end of the truck, the guy flew up in the air, he flipped like three times before landing next to his motorcycle," Sosa said. "I swerved into the parking lot, jumped out and ran over to him and watched him take his last breath, something I never want to see in my life."

Police said the Jeep drove a short distance after the accident before the driver jumped out and ran, leaving two passengers still inside the vehicle. "It was the truck's fault," Sosa insisted. "He should have been patient and waited."

Alhilo is a refugee from Iraq who emigrated to the U.S. with his family in 2000. Family members said Alhilo attended South High School, worked at King Soopers and aspired to be a computer engineer. "Just a nice person to be with," said Hani Alkheraila, Alhilo's cousin.

"You'd meet him in the street, you'd love him." Alkheraila urged anyone who saw the accident and had information of value to contact police. "Anybody knows anything, just step forward," he said. "It may be my kid one day or your kid so it's very important."

Alkheraila said Alhilo's family is struggling with the suddenness of his loss. "He's with you and then in the evening he's gone," he said. "You woke up this morning and it's not a family."

Police said Monday they're making progress in apprehending the driver but no arrests have been made.

Fatal Accident Results in New Colorado Tow Truck Law | Denver Car ...

Tow truck drivers in Colorado and throughout the nation are singularly exposed to roadway dangers and have a heightened chance of becoming victims in motor vehicle accidents owing to their vulnerability posed by close proximity to traffic and other factors as they are working.

Many people are familiar with the recent occurrence of a tragic outcome that well demonstrates this fact. Sadly -- and as we noted in a June 1 blog post -- a Springs tow truck driver became entangled in cable and was dragged along a road in February after the owner of the SUV he was in the process of towing got in the vehicle and suddenly drove away.

The vehicle was illegally parked, and accident investigators say that the tow truck operator was dragged for more than a mile. Further details concerning the driver's alleged conduct during the incident are reported in our earlier post.

That incident was far from forgotten by state resident and legislators, and a new bill was signed into law last week by Governor John Hickenlooper that essentially pays homage to the victim by providing for new and stringent requirements to protect tow truck drivers as they work. Enactment of the legislation led a fellow tow truck operator to observe that his friend's death "wasn't in vain."

The new law requires a tow truck driver to put a large warning sticker on the vehicle stating that it is "under tow," and it makes it a crime for a vehicle owner to get into his or her car while it is being towed.

Additionally, and effective from July 1, all motorists approaching a tow truck on a road shoulder that has its lights flashing must move to an adjacent lane to provide for an enlarged safety barrier.
