Work to start soon for Alterra Bay View project
Cafe, bakery and commissary.Alterra said on its blog last month that demolition would start the first week of June, but not much has happened yet. However, I noticed this weekend that there’s fencing around the building, so I’d expect work to start soon.
Alterra plans to build a 13,000-square-foot facility at the intersection of Lincoln, Howell and Kinnickinnic avenues in Milwaukee. Originally it planned to renovate the existing building but decided to rebuild because renovation would have been too expensive, according to its website. The city has issued $4 million in industrial revenue bonds for the project. The bonds let companies borrow money from banks at a lower interest rate because they are tax exempt.
The project has been somewhat controversial because of the city assistance and the number of coffee shops already existing on Kinnickinnic Avenue, but many have spoken in support of the project. Alterra says the project will help improve the retail climate in Bay View and be a catalyst for projects such as the repaving of Lincoln Avenue.
