Mayor Champions Capital's Innovative Manufacturers
The Mayor of London today championed the capital’s manufacturers as he visited two world-renowned London-based firms making a vital contribution to the city’s economy.
Boris Johnson highlighted the importance of nurturing London’s businesses and talented entrepreneurs during visits to award-winning brewery Fuller Smith & Turner of Chiswick and iconic bicycle firm Bromptons.
London is a global centre for design innovation with a world beating creative services sector and the Mayor is doing all he can to ensure it remains an attractive city for all businesses to invest in. Creating a skilled workforce is vital and the Mayor is currently on track to meet his target to create 20,000 apprenticeship opportunities by the end of the academic year and 3,000 apprentices within the GLA group alone by 2012. These include opportunities for engineers who form the backbone of the manufacturing sector.
Fuller’s and Bromptons are among hundreds of firms who have helped to train Londoners through offering apprenticeships.
Fuller’s is the capital’s only remaining traditional family brewery and has existed on its site for over 160 years. Famous for its real ales, including the world famous ‘London Pride’ which it distributes through freehouses, supermarkets and its own chain of around 365 pubs, and exports to over 60 overseas countries, Fuller’s remains firmly committed to its London HQ.
The Mayor joined Fuller’s Chair, Michael Turner and Sales Director, Richard Fuller, both descendants of the company’s original founders, to tour the brewery. Fullers has continually chosen to invest in its existing site including the current £5 million project installing state of the art beer ‘maturation’ and ‘conditioning’ tanks rather than take the cheaper option of relocating away from the capital.
The Mayor then cycled on a Brompton bike to Brompton’s Brentford factory with Managing Director, William Butler-Adams, to see how the company has achieved success by investing in research and responding with innovative design to changing market needs. There they were joined by the inventor of the iconic fold-up bike, Andrew Ritchie, who still part owns the company, for a tour of the production process. Each bike is individually hand crafted and assembled by highly skilled engineers and Bromptons are today exported to over 38 countries including the USA, Far East and to the European capital of cycling, Holland.

Training connect attends ukbma launch event | The Globe
Pam Suri, director of Saregama Music and Dance Academy, welcomed sponsors and members of the press to the Holiday Inn, Brentford, on 17 May for the media launch of the UK Bhangra Music Awards (UKBMA) 2011.
Created in 2009 to showcase Asian musical talent in the UK, the awards will take place this year at the prestigious Indigo 02 Arena on 11 September 2011. Training Connect academic director Semida Haji was there, with other members of her team, to represent the firm as one of the event’s sponsors.
“Organising an event on this scale would be a major undertaking for anyone,” Semida commented, “and the media spotlight is certain to be intense. But we have every faith Pam will pull it off with her usual flamboyant style!” The evening offered a taster of things to come, with many stalwarts of the UK Asian music scene mingling with guests.
Training Connect’s Semida Haji was photographed with Pam Suri and with Channi Singh from Alaap. All the guests enjoyed an excellent dinner and joined in wishing Pam Suri every success. Training Connect expressed its best wishes both for this year’s event and for the future, trusting that the UKBMA will go from strength to strength.
