93 Sayre seniors graduate

Friday evening, under a sunny sky, 93 Sayre Area School District seniors smiled as they turned their tassels from one side of their mortar board hats to the other, and became Sayre Area High School alumni.

Sayre Superintendent Dean Hosterman said the class of 2011 is one that represents great academic and athletic achievement.

"I hope each of your finds great pleasure and satisfaction in your achievements," he said to the students.

While the students may have come across some challenges on their paths to getting their diplomas, he said their commitment was being celebrated on their graduation day. Hosterman also used the word "joy," and said he hoped that "it fits the way you feel today."

"As high school graduates, you've completed the first step toward achieving your future goals," Hosterman said. "Good luck, good fortune, and my very best wishes for your future success."

Sayre School Board President James Osborn congratulated the students on getting to the day they'd all been waiting for.

"Today is the day they say 'I did it,'" he said. "It's up to you to give it all your best."

Many speakers at the 125th commencement ceremony gave the students advice, including high school principal Dayton Handrick. He advised the students to work hard, help someone who needs it, and have fun.

"Enjoy the little things and laugh at yourself," he said.

Handrick said he knows that the class of 2011 will go on to accomplish great things, based on what they've already accomplished in school.

Michelle Pettitt, a biology teacher at Sayre Area High School, also had some advice to give the students, her advice based on the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Talking about the movie, Pettitt drew comparisons between real life and the film, and told the students one of the lessons learned from the movie is not to be afraid to take challenges head-on.

"You will fail sometimes, but disappointment and failure will only serve as a motivator for you," she said.

Just as students took many tests in school, Pettitt said life is a big test, and they will learn lessons along the way. She also told the students that it's important to have a good character, and to have confidence.

Pettitt told the students that just as Charlie received his golden ticket in the movie, they were receiving theirs - their diplomas.
