3-day celebration thrills 90-year-old birthday queen

On Saturday, spirits were high during a family reunion hosted at the McNeill home in Pine Level. More than 40 guests surrounded the birthday honoree in the place known as "Caledonia." The birthday queen enjoyed the luncheon from her table, where another beautiful arrangement of roses was accented with Swarovski crystals to add elements of sparkle. Guests also marveled at the Swarovski crystal pendants and imported Sweet Sahara roses that were tied to sage chiffon ribbons and suspended at varying lengths from the room's chandeliers. The focal area of the room was the two-tiered fresh strawberry cake that had been fashioned with a pink fondant bow and handmade gum paste pink roses and peonies. Positioned on a table that featured a sheer sage green embroidered overlay with a wide satin band, the cake sat atop a silver plateau with hundreds of pink and sage green rose petals supporting the birthday color scheme.

She married Jesse McNeill of Pine Level in 1942, and honeymooned in Daytona Beach, Fla., under the blackout restrictions of World War II. Together they raised two children and watched their family expand before Jesse McNeill passed away in December of 2007.
