Catherine Review

“I got this girl and she wants me to duke her – I told her I’d come scoop her around eight, she said, Super!” Yes this is a MF DOOM lyric, but it actually applies to Atlus’ latest release. Catherine is, as cliché as this may sound, a breath of fresh air to gaming in the States. In itself, it is a hybrid game merging dating simulator and puzzle gaming into one long overdue package. The fact this game being release states side was ever in question speaks volumes of the predicament gaming in the States is in. Thankfully, Atlus went through with it, releasing the game on the Xbox 360 and PS3. It paid off for them. Catherine has sold 200,000 copies in its first week alone. Clearly there was a market of people who were either excited for the game, or just wanted to play something different from the current over-saturated gaming market here. The PS3 and Xbox 360 version have different cover art, as seen above. Both of versions of Catherine’s cover art are well done, though I prefer the cover art on the PS3 version. So, what makes Catherine so different? What makes Catherine a good game?

Catherine puts players in the role of Vincent Brooks, a 32 year old, poorly paid systems engineer for an ordinary technology company. Vincent is far from the ideal or usual protagonist gamers maybe used to. His plight in Catherine is not a about saving the universe/someone or getting revenge. It is simply about making the “right” decisions. Vincent is in a predicament that is not colossal scale wise, but it is one a lot of men might be able to relate to. He has been dating a woman named Katherine for about five years now. Katherine is a 32 year old, well off manager for an apparel company. She is starting to pressure him into marriage. She comes off as very controlling, especially when she tries to force him to “better” himself. Vincent seems content with how things in his life are and this causes an inner conflict that needs resolution. Vincent begins to have weird nightmares mainly due to said pressuring from Katherine. Soon, Vincent runs into Catherine at his neighbourhood bar, The Stray Sheep, where he usually hangs out with his friends he has known since his childhood. Catherine is 22 years old, charming, seemingly innocent, and drop dead gorgeous. She is literally Vincent’s type of woman, and she seems to share his ideology towards relationships and keeping things as they are. To top it all off, Katherine reveals that she might be pregnant to Vincent and already begins making plans for him without his say. Whether he makes the right decision for himself or based on how society dictates is up to players.

When I finally got motivation again, it lasted me just long enough to download this movie onto my computer before it completely disappeared. Ugh. This took me forever! I started it about two weeks ago and then completely lost motivation for it…so I decided to finish it today (SNOW DAY!) so I can start my next one…I think I actually like it better towards the end when I was rushing. Huh. In any case, this isn’t my favorite, or my least favorite, so I’m happy. Next vid…don’t know. Maybe Shrek?
