If I Were a Major League Pitcher, My Entrance Song Would Be…

Baseball can be a slow, methodical game, which slows down even more when pitching changes are made.  However, can be an element of exciting drama when a reliever, usually a closer, enters a game or even if it’s a starter taking his warmup tosses before first pitch.  When the opening chords of “Enter Sandman” begin to echo through Yankee Stadium (or through wherever Billy Wagner pitched), the fans get up in anticipation of their dominant closer entering and slamming the door.  Or when a starter takes the mound for his pregame pitches, a dynamic tune can set the mood.  Often I’ve wondered what entrance music I would use if I was starting a game or coming in to close one out, so here are my top five options.

5. “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath: A song that has absolutely nothing to do with baseball enters the countdown at number five.  I’m not a huge fan of the Dark Prince but this guitar driven rock song just gets me going.  Plus, would you wanna face someone who can’t feel happiness and thinks love is unreal?  I didn’t think so.

4. “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: This song isn’t very hardcore, but I like the overall theme: don’t come around here no more.  Stepping into the batter’s box to face me?  Three strikes and you’re out, so don’t come around here no more.  Plus the video is really trippy and I’d want it to be played on the big screen during my warmup.

3. “The Game” by Motörhead : To explain this one, I must first admit that I enjoy wrestling (yes, I know the WWE is scripted, moving on).  For the past decade or so Triple H has entered to Motörhead’s “The Game,” either throwing the crowd into an ecstatic frenzy or sending them into a chorus of hate-filled boos.  A baseball player entering the game exhibits many of the same qualities as when a wrestler enters the area: there is a long walk from one area to another where all the attention will soon be focused, some drama if the situation is critical, and an ensuing matchup .  Something about this song just makes me wanna throw on spandex and get in the ring (sidenote: The Undertaker’s demonic entrance music would be pretty awesome as well).
