What inspired you to write "Burning Questions"?

The semester project for a children's literature class was to pen a book. From the start my plan was to write a picture book on the exploits of a Lego spaceship and its crew, but a plot never materialized. With the deadline looming large, a short chapter book popped into my head. To be honest, it just showed up on my mental doorstep without so much as a note attached, and even I don't know where it came from. In the final form it is a full length novel written more for an adult audience. Many teens will find it enjoyable as well.

What made you decide to tackle the issue of racial tension in the 1960s?

The heart of the book is really about a boy who, because of his experiences growing up in an orphanage, develops a heart for children bordering on the paternal.  This concern for children draws upon my own personal history.  My father left my family when I was quite young. God used that experience to develop my heart for children, and now I work with children as a missionary.  The setting and the racial tension serve to create an environment where this was the least likely outcome. The fact that he is Caucasian and the one child he cares for in particular is of African descent, goes against the very fabric of the culture into which he was born. It is this stigma that is represented by the antagonists in the story.

What has been the best thing about publishing your book?

The best thing about publishing my book is the satisfaction of having written a novel length piece. Many people are surprised by the fact that I was able to maintain the focus needed for a piece of this length, especially having been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. The second best thing is the positive feedback I have received on the book by many of those who have read it. It is nice to know that my imagination has benefited others.

What has been the worst thing about publishing your book?

The brutal feedback on the first draft was a major blow to my ego. I came from a short story background. I had also just completed seminary, which requires a totally different writing style. The results were not novel-worthy on the first try. After some sulking, I began the process of at least two major and several minor rewrites, which make me so thankful for the word processing technology we enjoy in the modern era!

Why did you go the self-publishing route?

How Hard Is It To Publish My Book On The Amazon Kindle? | E ...

, Because I have already done it. When I created the special 7 Secrets of Profitable E-books video, I had the audio transcribed.

Next, using the transcript as a launching point, I revised the content and created an e-book (some people just publish raw transcripts, but I prefer to take the opportunity to revise and expand on the topic.)

After completing the manuscript, I then published a PDF version of the text for the people who signed up to watch the video. Finally, I set out to learn just exactly what you have to do to create a Kindle e-book.

The Amazon Kindle Publishing Process

Preparing your book for Kindle publishing is relatively simple if you are familiar with the basic HTML coding for websites. Amazon has a few Kindle specific tags to add in, and then you can upload the file through their digital publishing platform known as Kindle Digital Publishing.

If the previous paragraph sounded like a foreign language to you, there are many templates available for Microsoft Word that will simplify the process (or you can pay a king’s ransom to someone to ” convert your document” for you.)

Amazon provides an online “virtual Kindle viewer” which allows you to preview your e-book in a Kindle like environment to catch and correct formatting problems before you publish.

The second major component to publishing on Amazon’s Kindle is creating your sales material. This material includes the publisher’s description of the content and a virtual cover. This is what appears on the item description page and Amazon. [Click here to view the 7 Secrets of Profitable E-books page as an example]

Teaching the process of e-book cover design and advertising copywriting are beyond the scope of this article. If you need help with either, there are many copywriters and graphic designers who can help you. If you want to try doing yourself, I recommend looking at other similar books and modeling your efforts after theirs.

Secret Shortcuts to Publishing Fast

Would you like to avoid the trial and error method of learning to publish on the Amazon Kindle? Well, then you are in luck. These days there are several training resources available that will lead you step-by-step through the process (wish they had been available when I was getting started.) Other than paying someone to do the work for you, this is the fastest way to get your e-book selling on the Kindle marketplace.
