IT was a beautiful summer’s evening when 18 members met for their July meeting in the Palmer Room at Dunsden village hall.

Eleven members had spent the afternoon at the Herb Farm in Sonning Common and all agreed that it had been a wonderful occasion.

The Benson lunch was declared excellent by all those who had attended.

The promotional campaign to encourage public interest in the WI continues and members were invited to join the next sub-committee meeting to provide ideas.

Jean Young entertained members by demonstrating the skills of ikebana, a Japanese type of flower arranging.

The audience was lulled into peaceful observation of shapes and beauty produced by the calming and precise placing of leaves and flowers.

Japanese women can apparently spend up to two hours or more designing displays influenced by such things as the moon and Heaven.

The wealthy classes and priests were the original designers of this art form and that is why there is such a spiritual connection with the designs of the different schools of ikebana.

Mrs Young warned that using four items in a design was considered unlucky because the Japanese symbol for four and the one for death are very similar.

She produced various displays with flowers from her garden, saying that an arrangement with buds depicted the future, full flower the present and a seed head the past.

Even slug-bitten or damaged leaves could be used as these portrayed nature.

All were displayed in simple shapes and supported by a kensan, a metal pin holder covered with water and disguised by leaves and other items.

The talk was a fascinating insight into Japanese customs and beliefs as well as the skills needed for ikebana.

The competition for a hand-designed birthday card was won jointly by Jenny Hermon and Sylvia Saint.

Jenny also won the flower of the month competition with a stunning dahlia.

During the August recess members will be selling cakes and produce at the Binfield Heath Flower Show on the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend.

Our next meeting will be in the village hall on September 12 at 7.30pm.

Nick Channer will be describing The Mystery Of Agatha Christie and the competition will be an Agatha Christie quiz. All Christie buffs are welcome to come and show off their prowess.
