There may be no evidence of a test.

Delmar Litchfield can certainly attest.

Litchfield, 70, chose to live in his truck for the last year and four months because of his inability to find employment or housing he could afford on her Social Security check, which would allow him to live with her two big dogs, Duke and Roja.

These days, however, Litchfield, who recently found a home and enrolled at Victoria College, faces new tests in both the classroom and in the construction of his new life as a tenant house.

"Things are working for me," Litchfield said as he sat in his living room decorated in restrained gently caressing the head Roja. "It seems that my life is finally back in phase."

Litchfield, who saved the Roya, 6 years old doberman pinscher, and Duke, a dog 5 years and Chow mix, when they were puppies, refused to give up the dogs, which he considers his children, exchange for hosting a better life.

A long time resident of California, Litchfield moved to Mexico City in March 2001.

Unemployed and homeless, life was not easy to Litchfield, which eventually made its way from McAllen in Victoria.

"It was difficult, but it was something I had to do until I could get something," he said. "We all have to adapt to our environment."

On arrival in Victoria, Litchfield said he fell into a routine of taking the dogs to exercise and play twice a day at Riverside Park, spending time at Starbucks and the public library using the Internet; sleep in the parking lot of a local truck stop and eat breakfast in the kitchen of Christ.

He also tried unsuccessfully to find work.

Despite having worked as a machinist, construction worker, superintendent of public works, oil driller, real estate broker and a petty officer in the Navy, Litchfield said he was repeatedly refused jobs.

Following an article by Victoria lawyer earlier about him and his dogs, Litchfield said he was flooded with offers from Carrefour-area residents to provide the dog food, housing, money and even a shower hot, everything that he said he was pleased to have received.

"I do not take things for people," said Litchfield. "I am overwhelmed by how friendly people are there."

Determined to better the situation of his family, Litchfield tried to start his own business, which he likens to NASDAQ for real estate is until he realized he did not know -how to build the company website and databases.
