Analyst says Apple's iPad will 'dominate indefinitely'
A Sanford Bernstein analyst has claimed that Apple’s iPad will dominate the global tablet market indefinitely.
But does this mean that we have another iPod-like phenomenon on our hands?
We say ‘iPod-like phenomenon’ because when Apple launched its portable music player its sale eclipsed those of practically every other MP3 Player manufacturer on the planet – just look at what happened to Microsoft’s Zune device.
But has Apple struck gold again? Well, according to Sanford Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon, Apple is set to dominate the tablet market indefinitely .
Rasgon points out in a 49 page document on the subject that Apple managed to sell 19.5 million iPads in its first year of availability, which is twice the amount of netbooks and three times the number of iPhones sold in the same period of time.
To put this in context, says Rasgon, ‘Apple has created a company the size of EMC in one year.’
Rasgon added: ‘We have never seen such a high purchasing intent for a new category in the past.’
But that’s not all. Previous Sanford Bernstein research has also indicated that ‘20 per cent of consumers plan to purchase a tablet in the next 12 months’ and that PC manufacturers shouldn’t be ‘too worried about PC cannibalisation’ as the affect of tablets on this market should be minimal.
Nonetheless, Rasgon’s predictions don’t look too good for the likes of HTC, Motorola, Samsung and LG.
All of these manufacturers have Android tablets coming to market this year. But in a market dominated by Apple, do they stand a chance?
In a word: Yes. Android is now a powerful brand and we can see a lot of Android-powered tablets shifting in 2012 – especially the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 .
We know Motorola and BlackBerry have been having some ‘sales issues’ with their respective PlayBook and Xoom devices, but we think brands like HTC and Samsung have the power to cut through these early teething issues and gain some ground on Apple.
Of course, this doesn’t mean Apple has much to worry about – neither Samsung nor HTC will be catching it up anytime soon. Apple is, after all, two generations of tablet in front of the competition – and that is quite a head start.

Microsoft still has a lot of employees working on Apple software like Office on Mac, Bing on iPhone/iPad, Zune on Mac, etc. They are also competitors for many products, but they are not enemies. iCloud should have been named as iCopy or iFake.

I was considering buying a Tivo HD the next time they have one on sale and then paying for a life time subscription. I guess my main consideration what type of PC can I put it in and keep it on and have it be unobtrusive and power friendly.
