Softball Bantams

The Chatham Golden Eagles can go to the 2012 United States Fastpitch Association World Series in Florida after placing second in a qualifying tournament Sunday in Mississauga.

The Golden Eagles had two hits -- Kaitlyn Davie's triple and Clare Gilhula's single -- in a 9-1 championship loss to Kitchener.

Alyssa Chacon allowed one run in two innings. Morgan St. Pierre fanned two and gave up four runs in three innings.

Chatham finished with a 3-4 record.

The Golden Eagles began the playoffs with a 5-4 win over Mississauga in extra innings. Chacon gave up four runs in seven innings and struck out two. Davie tripled twice and singled and Katryna Heyink singled twice.

Chatham reached the final with a 10-2 win over Scarborough. Caitlyn Schives allowed two runs in four innings and fanned three.

Heyink hit two singles, Jordan Ashely tripled and Elissa Noah, Michelle Truong and Schives singled.

The Golden Eagles lost their round-round opener 13-7 to Scarborough. Arielle Dehaw doubled and singled and Schives had two RBIs.

Chacon struck out eight in five innings in a 10-4 loss to Ancaster. Davie singled twice and Merissa Clowater tripled.

Noah singled twice and Chacon struck out five in an 8-3 loss to Oakville.

Chacon tossed a four-inning shutout to beat Guelph 9-0. Abby Mitchell led the five-hit attack with two singles.

The host Chatham Reliance Home Comfort Diamonds went 5-0 to win the Chatham Minor Baseball Association tournament on the weekend.

Conner Goldsmith gave up one run in five-plus innings, struck out seven, singled twice and drove in a run in a 4-2 win over Tecumseh in the final. Evan Rogers earned the save.

Grant Spence hit an RBI triple and Alec McGregor had an RBI double.

Goldsmith and Ethan Lutz homered in a 21-3 win over Byron in the opener. Bryce Joseph doubled and singled, Seth Henderson singled twice and winning pitcher Brandan Tennant struck out four in 1 2/3 innings.

Spencer Marcus and Goldsmith homered in a 23-2 win over the London Minor Badgers. McGregor and Ethan Paxton each hit three singles, Nolan Ross and Tennant had two apiece, and Marcus fanned eight in three hitless innings for the win.

Joseph doubled and singled twice to beat Windsor Walker Homesites 14-4. Spence and Marcus had two hits apiece and Tennant got the win after allowing four runs in four innings.

Reliance Home Comfort and the City of Brampton are excited to offer free admission to Professor’s Lake this Canada Day! The ‘Chill with Reliance on Canada Day’ event is providing free admission to the first 160 families and 190 adults who visit the popular beach destination on July 1.

Those interested will also have the opportunity to speak with the experts and learn best practices and tips on how to stay cool during this year’s hot and sunny summer.

Professor’s Lake opens at 10 a.m. and offers many fun activities like beach volleyball, a waterslide and boathouse rentals including canoe, kayak, paddleboat and waterbike. The lake is located at 1660 North Park Drive – Bramalea Road & North Park Drive.
